Royal Selangor, the world’s foremost name in quality pewter, is internationally acclaimed for its commitment to innovative design and fine craftsmanship.
Pewtersmithing is an age-old craft. For Royal Selangor, their story began in 1885. Equipped with pewter smithing skills, a young Chinese immigrant Yong Koon began making pewter items with the ‘Yu He’ (玉和) touchmark in the fledgling tin mining town of Kuala Lumpur. In the 1970s, the Company received a royal warrant from The Sultan of Selangor and changed its name to Royal Selangor. Today, it has over 250 skilled craftspeople and a history spanning more than 130 years.
Many Royal Selangor pewter pieces have become cherished collector’s items. Staying true to Malaysian roots and the nation’s ethnic diversity, these works of pewter have a natural warmth about them that speaks of timeless classics and understated elegance. Crafted in fine pewter, each piece is painstakingly hand-worked and polished. With the pewter crafting processes from casting, and polishing to finishing, skilled pewter smiths bring out textures and finishes that define the stunning beauty inherent in each Royal Selangor creation, underlined by a strong brand tradition.
In its 25th year, the group continues to craft, reinvent and safeguard a unique Malaysian Chinese brand of art and culture. By sharing their creations with the world, HANDS in turn brings the world back home. The group’s body of work adds vibrancy and colour to the contemporary music landscape.
It is the inspiration of heritage and a commitment to reinventing it that brings Royal Selangor and HANDS Percussion together. Their stories share similar traits of vision, passion and entrepreneurship. The ebb and flow of history have carried with it aspirations that continue to widen and deepen cultural dimensions. In an unending cycle of tradition, exploration, challenges and innovation, lies true grit and the spirit of art.
